When I get a request for an outdoor session, I typically hear “I’d love those golden sun images”. During the summer time that means a later session time. I know it’s hard on babies and toddlers to stay up late – it messes with their schedule and night time routine. If you really want more golden images are okay with keeping your little one awake a little past their bedtime – here’s some tips on helping it go as smooth as possible.
- Plan on giving them a later than usual nap. Pushing it up will help them not get a tired during that later evening time.
- Don’t have any other plans or out of usual activities planned the day of. Babies and children like routine. It helps them feel secure. So if you do too much out of their normal schedule, it can cause them to feel anxious.
- As for any session at any time of the day… full bellies before a session is always best. It’s okay to have a simple snack on hand (like gold fish) – but typically breaking for snacks in the middle of session can lead to your child wanting to keep wanting more.
- Pack their pajamas and anything else they want to wind down with in the car ride home.
- Make it fun. For toddlers you can tell them they are going to the park to play some games.
If doing a golden hour session isn’t the right fit for your family – that’s okay. I do earlier evening outdoor sessions all the time. It just means I’ll be looking for nice shady areas for our session. Here’s a beautiful family session that shows a great example of what an earlier in July session looks like.
