One of the most common questions new parents ask before booking newborn photography is: “How long is this going to take?”
It’s a fair question – you’re tired, your baby is unpredictable, and planning anything right now can feel daunting.
The truth? A newborn session shouldn’t be squeezed into a strict window. Whether families choose an in-studio experience or are still deciding between options like what to expect from an in-studio newborn session or whether an in-home newborn session is a good fit, timing should always be flexible and baby-led.

What Impacts the Length of a Newborn Session
Several factors influence how long newborn photos take:
- Baby’s sleep patterns that day
- Feeding frequency
- The need for soothing and settling
- Diaper changes
- Parent + sibling capture time
- Breaks to support comfort and safety
Every baby is different, and the session will naturally shift to meet their needs.

So How Long Do Newborn Sessions Take, Typically?
While my sessions are never timed, most baby-led newborn sessions fall within a 2 to 3 hour range.
Some are shorter. Some take a little longer. But this window includes:
- settling in after arrival
- capturing a variety of poses and family combinations
- and taking gentle breaks for feeding, soothing, and diaper changes as needed
Because the session is baby-led, your photographer will never rush through a setup or hesitate to pause when your baby needs something.

Why My Newborn Sessions Aren’t Timed
My newborn sessions are designed with one philosophy at the center:
the baby leads, we follow.
That means:
- no pressure to “perform” on a schedule
- no stress if baby wants to eat again
- and space to slow down when soothing is needed
We take breaks to accommodate feeding, cuddles, calming, and resets so your baby stays comfortable and safe. This also leads to better, more authentic images – the kind that feel peaceful, emotional, and real.

How to Plan Your Day Around Newborn Photos
To make the session day easier:
- Don’t schedule anything immediately after
- Feed baby right before you arrive (if possible, but not required)
- Bring extra milk if you’re bottle feeding
- Pack only essentials – diapers, wipes, pacifier, and feeding supplies
- Expect pauses, and embrace them – they’re part of the flow
