Preparing for a photography session with a little one can be overwhelming. Here’s my favorite tips to help moms to ensure you have a smooth session.

  1. Choose the right session time. Most babies are happiest in the morning. Trying to a morning or early afternoon time that fits in with nap time is ideal. Side note: I allow moms to reach me an hour before their session time if it needs adjusted – I know babies schedules get off.
  2. Make sure baby is fed before their session. Along with tired eyes, being hungry will prevent those little smiles to show through. Sometimes little ones need a little snack during session, and that’s okay! Just prepare for it, just in case.
  3. Be prepared to be involved. Many times a baby needs warmed up to a new space. Staying in mom’s arms can help them feel secure while getting adjusted. Sometimes the biggest smiles I get from a baby is while mom is playing or snuggling with them – so I always like to encourage every mom to join in.

The studio has been created to be a cozy and safe space for little ones. I always keep the space a little on the warm side. Babies don’t like being cold. I keep everything simple. I’ll incorporate pretty textures and soft blankies. The props I use, like a little basket or stool have a purpose – like to show how big a little has grown in that basket, or to allow them show up their standing skills while grasping a stool.

I love engaging with little ones – and adore when I get those mimicking gummy smiles. But I also adore getting sweet moments, tiny details, and blank stares. All the things you’ll want to remember about your baby as they grow way too fast!
