The best time to secure your newborn photographer is while you are still pregnant. The ideal time to captures the freshness and tiny details of a newborn is typically within the first two weeks. Photographers, especially ones that specialize in newborns do book up. I personally only take a very limited number of newborn due dates within a window of time. This allows me to provide exceptional service, and flexibility. So booking your photographer before baby arrives ensures your photographer will have availability.
Fun fact! only 5% of babies arrive on their due date. There is so much to do get ready for baby. Not knowing when they will choose to make their appearance makes it easy to put things off… like booking your newborn photographer. I recommend booking your photographer after entering your second trimester. I like to send my new parents a planning guide, parent prep guide, and even an opportunity to come visit the studio. So crossing off booking your newborn photographer from your baby t0-do list early will help you be able to take your time to ask questions, know how to prepare, and be ready to document such a precious time.
So now that you have your newborn photographer chosen, and your due date secured on their calendar. What about scheduling their actual session? Glad you asked! Like I mentioned before – you want to capture all the freshness and tiny details of your newborn, so typically within the first two weeks is ideal. However, there is plenty of reasons why I get older than two week newborns in the studio. Sometimes a baby needs time in the NICU, or sometimes mom needs healing or maybe even adjustment time. Whatever the reason, don’t worry. I have a lot of experience with older newborns. Just note, newborns older than 1 month – it’s less likely they will be as sleepy or curled up. So you may end up with more awake captures, and adjustments made to poses to keep them comfortable.
